In Guwahati, South Africa national cricket team declared their second innings at 260/5 after a strong 94 from Tristan Stubbs, setting India national cricket team a daunting 549‑run chase.
Guwahati, 25 November 2025: On the fourth day of the second Test at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati, South Africa went on the offensive against India by declaring their second innings at 260 for 5. That declaration came after a resolute 94 from Tristan Stubbs, narrowly missing his maiden Test hundred.
The visitors had already posted a massive first‑innings total of 489, leaving India trailing by 288 runs.India’s response in their first innings fell short at 201. Facing the largest target of 549 runs at home in recent memory, India now face a steep uphill climb.
Stubbs’ knock was built on patient resilience; he faced 180 balls, struck nine boundaries and one six, and shared strong partnerships 101 with Tony de Zorzi, then another 82 with Wiaan Mulder before being dismissed by left‑arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja finished with figures of 4 for 62, showing that India’s bowling attack did fight back to a degree.

By setting this gargantuan target, South Africa have not only taken firm control of the Test match but also positioned themselves to seal the two‑match series. India now must either pull off a near‑miraculous chase or bat through the remaining sessions to save the match. The pitch behaviour, fading light in the late afternoon session and the psychological pressure of the chase will all be significant factors.
As the fourth innings unfolds, all eyes will be on how India’s batsmen respond. Can they muster the resolve to challenge this record‑level target, or will South Africa close out a historic series win on Indian soil?
