The state chemists’ association warns of increasing spurious drugs entering Maharashtra markets and calls on the FDA to take urgent action, citing complaints and alleged circulation of fake medicines statewide.

Mumbai, 28 November 2025: At a time when concerns over drug safety are mounting, the Maharashtra State Chemists and Druggists Association (MSCDA) has formally raised the alarm over a rising number of spurious and counterfeit medicines circulating across the state. In a letter dated 26 November 2025 to the Food and Drug Administration, Maharashtra (FDA), the association demanded immediate corrective measures.

The association highlighted that despite an earlier FDA directive — issued in October 2023 — asking district offices to record and report medicine stock purchased from outside the state, implementation has been patchy. According to the MSCDA, this has allowed wholesale distributors to continue importing large quantities of out-of-state medicines, raising the risk of low-quality or fake drugs entering the supply chain.

A recent complaint involving alleged spurious batches of a blood-pressure drug — reported by a major pharmaceutical company — was cited to underscore the danger. The MSCDA stressed that wholesalers linked to such batches should lose their licence, and chemists involved should be permanently barred from selling drugs.

The association’s demand comes amid broader concerns over drug safety. Earlier this year, independent inspections by the FDA in Maharashtra found numerous pharmacies violating regulations on prescription-only medications and identified instances of expired or substandard drugs — prompting license suspensions and stop-sale orders across multiple regions.

MSCDA officials have called on the FDA to strengthen enforcement, tighten scrutiny of wholesalers and distributors, and ensure transparency across the supply chain. They warned that failure to act swiftly could compromise public health and erode trust in medical supply systems.
