UIDAI has introduced a new regulation strengthening Aadhaar security, prohibiting hotels and event organizers from keeping physical copies of Aadhaar cards as proof during bookings, aiming to end paper-based verification.

Mumbai | December 10, 2025:The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued new guidelines to enhance the security of Aadhaar data. Under the updated rules, hotels, including OYO, and event management companies can no longer collect or store physical copies of customers’ Aadhaar cards for bookings. The move is part of UIDAI’s broader effort to phase out paper-based verification and reduce the risk of misuse or unauthorized access.

A senior UIDAI official confirmed that the new regulations will be officially published soon, emphasizing that retaining photocopies of Aadhaar cards is a violation of existing Aadhaar laws. The guidelines aim to protect personal data while still allowing identity verification digitally or through secure electronic methods approved by UIDAI.

This decision is expected to affect a large number of hospitality and event companies that previously relied on paper-based Aadhaar proof for customer verification. Companies will now need to adopt digital alternatives to comply with UIDAI standards while maintaining efficient customer service. The policy marks a significant step toward securing sensitive personal information and modernizing verification processes across industries.
