Vijay Diwas 2025 Commemorated at Southern Command War Memorial, Pune, Honouring Heroes of 1971 Victory

Vijay Diwas 2025 was observed in Pune with military honours as Southern Command paid tribute to 1971 war martyrs, felicitated veterans and Veer Naris, marking 54 years of India’s historic victory.

Pune | December 17, 2025:Vijay Diwas 2025 was commemorated with customary military solemnity and dignity at the Southern Command War Memorial in Pune on Tuesday, marking 54 years of India’s decisive victory in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. The observance was led by Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, in the presence of serving personnel and veterans from the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy.

The central event of the commemoration was a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial, during which Lt Gen Seth laid a wreath on behalf of all ranks of Southern Command, paying homage to the soldiers, airmen and sailors who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of the nation’s sovereignty and freedom. A solemn silence was observed as a mark of collective remembrance and gratitude to the martyrs of the 1971 War, a conflict that led to the creation of Bangladesh and remains one of India’s most significant military achievements.

As part of the Vijay Diwas observances, veterans, including those who actively participated in the 1971 War, were felicitated in recognition of their distinguished service and contribution to the historic victory. Veer Naris were also honoured during the ceremony, acknowledging their courage, resilience and lifelong sacrifice, which continue to inspire generations of service personnel and citizens alike. The felicitation reflected the Indian Army’s enduring commitment to honouring its veterans and war widows while preserving the legacy of courage, duty and sacrifice.

The commemoration concluded with an interaction between the Army Commander, serving personnel, veterans and Veer Naris at the Southern Command Museum lawns adjacent to the War Memorial. The gathering reinforced the enduring bond between generations of soldiers and their families, united by a shared legacy of service, sacrifice and national pride associated with Vijay Diwas and the 1971 war victory.
