Pune Railway Station introduces digital locker facility on Platform 1 offering secure, automated luggage storage for travellers with flexible pricing and 24-hour access.

Pune | 18 December 2025: Pune Railway Station has taken a major step toward improving passenger convenience by introducing a digital locker facility on Platform No. 1. The initiative is aimed at helping travelers securely store their luggage while waiting for trains, during long layovers, or while stepping out of the station for short durations. With passenger footfall steadily rising at Pune Junction, the new system is expected to reduce dependence on traditional cloakrooms and offer a faster, more reliable alternative for baggage storage.

The digital locker facility has been installed on Platform 1 toward the Mumbai end of the station, near the multipurpose stall, ensuring easy accessibility for passengers. The lockers operate through a fully automated system, eliminating the need for manual handling by railway staff. Travelers can select a locker, complete digital payment, and secure their belongings through a smart access process. The system has been designed to be user-friendly, even for first-time users, with clear instructions displayed on the unit.

A total of 24 lockers have been made available in different sizes to accommodate varying luggage needs. Medium-sized lockers are suitable for backpacks and cabin bags, while large and extra-large lockers can store suitcases and heavier luggage. The pricing has been kept flexible, allowing passengers to choose between short-term storage for a few hours or extended storage for up to 24 hours. This makes the facility especially useful for tourists, business travelers, and passengers with long gaps between connecting trains.

Railway officials say the digital lockers are part of a broader effort to modernize passenger amenities and generate non-fare revenue through smart infrastructure. Unlike conventional cloakrooms that often involve queues, paperwork, and fixed operating hours, the digital locker system offers quicker access and improved security. Each locker is electronically monitored, reducing the risk of theft and mishandling of baggage.

The introduction of digital lockers also gains significance in light of recent incidents of theft reported on long-distance trains. Secure on-station storage gives passengers the option to avoid carrying valuables or heavy bags unnecessarily, particularly during crowded travel hours. Authorities have repeatedly advised passengers to remain cautious with their belongings, and facilities like these add an extra layer of safety and convenience.

Pune Railway Station has been undergoing several upgrades in recent years to handle growing commuter pressure and improve overall passenger experience. The digital locker facility complements other improvements aimed at making the station more traveler-friendly and technologically advanced. Similar systems have already shown positive results at other busy railway stations, indicating strong acceptance among passengers.

In conclusion, the launch of the digital locker facility at Pune Railway Station marks a practical and timely upgrade in passenger services. By combining security, flexibility, and ease of use, the initiative is expected to benefit thousands of daily travelers and set a benchmark for modern amenities at major railway stations across the region.
