India’s first Ring Metro network has been inaugurated in Delhi, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching two new metro corridors aimed at improving urban connectivity and easing traffic congestion.

New Delhi, March 9, 2026: In a significant step toward strengthening urban transportation infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated two new metro corridors as part of the country’s first ‘Ring Metro’ system in New Delhi. The project is expected to enhance connectivity across the national capital and provide faster travel options for thousands of daily commuters.

The newly launched corridors form part of a circular metro network designed to connect major residential, commercial, and transit hubs across the city. Officials said the Ring Metro concept aims to create a loop-style rail system that allows passengers to travel between key areas without having to pass through already congested central interchange stations.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of modern public transportation in rapidly growing urban centers. He stated that projects like the Ring Metro not only improve commuting convenience but also contribute to reducing road congestion and air pollution.

The two newly opened corridors will connect multiple strategic points of the city and integrate with existing lines operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). With this addition, passengers will be able to switch lines more efficiently and reach their destinations through alternative routes across the metro network.

Officials from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said the Ring Metro is expected to significantly reduce travel time for commuters who previously had to rely on indirect routes. By creating a circular transit route, the project also aims to distribute passenger traffic more evenly across the network.

Urban planning experts say the ring-style system is a widely used concept in major global cities, as it helps improve mobility and supports expanding metropolitan populations. With Delhi’s population and commuter demand continuing to grow, the new infrastructure is expected to strengthen the city’s long-term public transport capacity.

During the event, Prime Minister Modi also emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding metro rail networks across India. Over the past decade, several major cities have witnessed rapid metro expansion as part of broader initiatives to improve urban mobility and promote sustainable transportation systems.

Officials added that the new corridors are equipped with modern safety features, improved station facilities, and better connectivity with bus services and other public transport options. The project is also expected to support economic activity by improving accessibility to business districts and residential areas.

The launch of the Ring Metro marks another milestone in the ongoing development of India’s urban transport infrastructure. Authorities believe the project will not only benefit daily commuters but also serve as a model for future metro expansion projects in other large cities across the country.
