India relies heavily on imports of fertilisers and fertiliser raw materials from several Gulf nations. Countries such as Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates play a significant role in supplying fertilisers or the essential components required for their production. Any instability in the region or disruption of key maritime trade routes could slow down shipments and affect fertiliser availability in India.

The situation becomes more critical due to the importance of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest shipping routes for energy and chemical supplies. If tensions escalate and shipping traffic through the route is affected, the movement of fertiliser cargo and raw materials could face delays For farmers in Telangana, urea remains a vital fertiliser for crops including paddy, cotton and maize. Timely access to fertiliser is crucial for maintaining crop health and productivity, particularly ahead of the upcoming agricultural season.

Any shortage or delay in supply could impact crop yields and increase financial pressure on farmers. Another factor adding to the concern is the possible disruption in natural gas supplies from the Gulf region.
