Pune Traffic Relief Plan: ₹740 Crore Allocated in PMC Budget 2026–27 for Flyovers, Bridges and Smart Parking

Pune, 10 March, 2026: In a major push to address the city’s worsening traffic congestion, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has allocated ₹740 crore in its 2026–27 budget for traffic management and road infrastructure projects. The funding will support the construction of flyovers, bridges, railway underpasses, tunnels, and new parking systems aimed at improving mobility across the rapidly growing city.

Over the past decade, Pune has seen an unprecedented rise in population and vehicle ownership. With expanding residential zones, IT hubs, and industrial areas, the pressure on the city’s road network has increased significantly. Civic authorities believe that strategic infrastructure investments are necessary to keep traffic movement efficient and reduce daily commuting delays.

Flyovers and Bridges to Reduce Major Bottlenecks

A large share of the ₹740-crore budget will be used for building and completing key flyovers and bridges at heavily congested junctions. These projects aim to eliminate traffic bottlenecks and provide smoother connectivity between major corridors.

Among the planned developments are:

• A flyover at Mundhwa Chowk, which sees heavy daily traffic due to nearby IT parks and residential areas.
• A new river bridge connecting Shivane and Nanded City, expected to improve connectivity on Pune’s western side.
• A flyover project between Chandni Chowk and Bhugaon, helping reduce congestion along the busy Pune–Mumbai highway approach road.
• Construction of a railway flyover near Sakhar Sankul and an underpass at Khadki, which will reduce long delays caused by railway crossings.

Civic planners say these works are designed to tackle long-standing traffic choke points that often slow down vehicle movement during peak hours.

Smart Parking and Pay-and-Park System

Apart from building infrastructure, the civic body also plans to introduce a pilot pay-and-park system on five key roads in Pune. The move is aimed at addressing the issue of unregulated roadside parking, which significantly reduces the usable width of many city roads.

Commercial zones and market areas often witness vehicles parked haphazardly along roadsides, creating traffic congestion. By formalizing parking through designated paid spaces, authorities expect to bring better discipline and improve traffic flow.

Urban mobility experts say that parking management is an essential part of traffic control in cities where road expansion possibilities are limited.

Integration with Metro and Public Transport

The traffic relief plan also focuses on improving connectivity with the Pune Metro network, which is gradually expanding across the city.

To encourage residents to shift from private vehicles to public transport, authorities are planning parking facilities at around 30 metro stations. These “park-and-ride” spaces will allow commuters to park their vehicles and continue their journey using metro services.

Flyovers are also being proposed near important intersections such as:

• Kothrud Bus Depot Chowk
• Ambedkar Chowk in Warje
• Dandekar Bridge Chowk

These improvements are expected to make travel to metro stations easier and reduce congestion around busy junctions.

Tunnel Projects Being Explored

In addition to bridges and flyovers, the civic administration is also studying the feasibility of two major tunnel projects that could dramatically reduce travel time across the city.

The proposed tunnels include:

• A tunnel connecting Pashan (Panchvati area) to Kothrud (Sutardara)
• A second tunnel linking Hingne Khurd with Taljai Chowk

If approved and implemented, these tunnels would create faster east-west connections by cutting through hilly terrain and avoiding long surface routes.

Pune’s Growing Traffic Challenge

Pune has evolved into one of India’s fastest-growing urban centres, with strong growth in the IT sector, education institutions, and manufacturing industries. However, infrastructure development has struggled to keep pace with this rapid expansion.

According to transport experts, the number of vehicles on Pune’s roads has multiplied dramatically in recent years. Many roads designed decades ago now carry traffic volumes far beyond their capacity, leading to regular congestion during morning and evening peak hours.

While infrastructure expansion can help ease pressure on major roads, experts say long-term solutions will require greater adoption of public transport, improved last-mile connectivity, and stricter parking regulations.

What Commuters Can Expect

If implemented on schedule, the new traffic projects could significantly improve travel conditions for Pune residents. Flyovers and bridges would reduce waiting time at busy intersections, while better parking management could free up road space in crowded commercial areas.

Combined with metro expansion, the initiative could help reshape the city’s transport ecosystem and encourage more sustainable commuting options.
