The Centre has assured Parliament that India faces no shortage of petrol, diesel, LPG or natural gas despite disruptions in global supplies due to the West Asia conflict
New Delhi | March 13, 2026: The Union government has clarified that there is no shortage of fuel in the country despite disruptions in global energy supplies caused by tensions in West Asia. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri provided the assurance in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Puri stated that India’s fuel supply chain remains stable and uninterrupted, and that adequate reserves of crude oil and petroleum products are available to meet domestic demand. He acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in West Asia has impacted nearly 20 percent of the global supply of crude oil, natural gas and LPG, particularly affecting shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
However, the minister said India has secured sufficient supplies by diversifying crude oil imports from multiple sources. While the country earlier depended heavily on shipments passing through the Hormuz route, the government has now significantly reduced that reliance by sourcing crude oil from around 40 countries worldwide.

He also informed Parliament that domestic oil refineries are operating at full capacity, with some even exceeding 100 percent output. As a result, there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, kerosene, aviation turbine fuel or other petroleum products.
Puri further noted that LPG procurement has been expanded beyond Gulf nations to include suppliers such as the United States, Norway, Canada, Algeria and Russia. He added that LPG production in India has increased by 28 percent over the past five days following instructions to refineries to ramp up output.

The minister said the government has absorbed a substantial portion of the rise in global LPG prices to protect consumers, especially economically weaker households.
He also urged citizens to avoid panic booking of gas cylinders, stressing that supplies remain stable and the average delivery time after booking continues to be around 2.5 days.
