Five States Head to Polls as Election Commission Announces Assembly Election Schedule

Voters in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will head to the polls in April, with results scheduled for May 4. The Election Commission has outlined a multi-phase voting process.

Kolkata | March 16, 2026: The Election Commission of India on Monday announced the schedule for the much-anticipated Assembly elections in five states-West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry-setting the stage for a major political contest in the country.

According to the poll panel, voting will take place in April through a multi-phase process to ensure smooth conduct of elections across the states. The counting of votes for all five assemblies will be held on May 4, when the political fate of several major parties and leaders will be decided.

The elections come at a crucial time for both the ruling parties and opposition groups in the respective states. Political parties have already begun intensifying their campaigns, with senior leaders expected to travel extensively across constituencies in the coming weeks to mobilize voters.

West Bengal is expected to witness one of the most closely watched contests, given its politically charged environment and high voter participation in previous elections. Major national and regional parties are preparing for a fierce battle, with issues such as governance, development, employment and law and order likely to dominate campaign narratives.

In Tamil Nadu, the election will once again revolve around key Dravidian political formations, with both the ruling party and the opposition gearing up for a high-stakes contest. Welfare schemes, economic development, and social justice are anticipated to be central themes in the state’s political discourse.

Assam is also set to see a competitive election, with parties focusing on regional identity, economic growth, infrastructure development and issues related to migration and citizenship. Deployment of central security forces, strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, and monitoring of campaign expenditure are among the key measures planned by the authorities.

With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in all five regions. This restricts governments and political parties from announcing new policy decisions or projects that could influence voters during the election period.

Political observers believe the elections will serve as an important indicator of the national political mood, as several prominent leaders are expected to campaign vigorously across the states.

As the campaign season gathers momentum, voters in these states will soon witness intense political activity, rallies, debates and public outreach programs, all leading up to the crucial polling days in April.
