World’s First Robotic Medical System ‘MedOS’
Researchers from Stanford and Princeton have developed ‘MedOS’, a robotic medical system using AI and XR technology to assist doctors in diagnosis, analysis, and treatment with greater precision and speed.
March 18, 2026 | Washington: In a major breakthrough for healthcare technology, researchers from Stanford University and Princeton University have unveiled the world’s first robotic medical system, ‘MedOS’. The advanced system is currently being deployed at the Stanford Blood Center and pathology departments in the United States to assist doctors in clinical decision-making.
Designed as a “co-pilot” for medical professionals, MedOS integrates a multi-agent artificial intelligence system that operates across three levels. The first AI agent evaluates patient symptoms such as fever or cough, while the second analyses past medical records and diagnostic reports. The third agent then recommends suitable treatments, tests, or medications, enabling faster and more accurate medical decisions. A key highlight of the system is its integration with Extended Reality (XR) smart glasses, which allow doctors to visualise 3D models of a patient’s body and view critical data like blood reports in real time. This immersive interface enhances understanding of internal conditions, improving diagnosis and treatment outcomes.
The system also incorporates collaborative robots (cobots) and intelligent gloves. These technologies assist during surgical procedures by stabilising hand movements and translating precise gestures into robotic actions, ensuring high accuracy in delicate operations.Currently, MedOS is primarily being used in blood testing and pathology workflows. Researchers believe that as the technology evolves, it could significantly reduce workload on healthcare professionals and extend advanced medical capabilities to remote and underserved regions.
