Union Cabinet is set to approve an amendment to the women’s reservation law, aiming to implement 33 percent quota before constituency delimitation, with the bill expected in Parliament next week
New Delhi | 18 March, 2026: The Union government is preparing to introduce an amendment to the women’s reservation law, with the aim of implementing the 33 percent quota for women in legislatures before the completion of the constituency delimitation process.
According to sources, the proposal is expected to receive approval during the Union Cabinet meeting scheduled today. Following this, the amendment bill is likely to be introduced in Parliament next week, with indications that it could be tabled in the Rajya Sabha at the start of the session.

The move comes as the existing law, passed in 2023, links the implementation of women’s reservation to the completion of delimitation. However, the government is now seeking to advance its enforcement, which would require a fresh constitutional amendment to modify the original provisions.

Officials suggest that the amendment is aimed at expediting political representation for women, though it is also being viewed in the context of upcoming assembly elections in several states. The proposed changes are expected to trigger detailed discussions in both Houses of Parliament before being put to vote.
In a related development, the Lok Sabha approved the Railway Ministry’s grant demands for the financial year 2026-27 through a voice vote after a two-day discussion. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that over 200 members participated in the debate, raising constituency-specific issues and development priorities.

The proposed amendment to the women’s reservation framework is likely to be closely watched, given its potential impact on the country’s political landscape.
