Pune | 18 March, 2026: Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan has found herself at the center of a growing controversy after new temple entry rules in Uttarakhand led to reports suggesting she was “barred” from visiting Kedarnath Temple. However, the reality is more nuanced. Authorities have clarified that she is not banned, but will need to comply with a newly introduced affidavit requirement applicable to all non-followers of Sanatan Dharma.

The development comes after the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee introduced a policy ahead of the upcoming Char Dham Yatra, stating that individuals who are not followers of Sanatan Dharma must submit a written affidavit declaring their faith in the tradition before being allowed entry into Kedarnath and other temples under its jurisdiction.

Temple committee officials emphasized that the rule is not targeted at any individual, including Sara Ali Khan, but is a broader measure aimed at preserving the religious sanctity of these sacred sites. The guideline will apply to all visitors who do not identify as followers of Sanatan Dharma.

Sara Ali Khan, who has frequently visited Kedarnath in the past and is known for her spiritual inclination, has become a focal point of the discussion due to her public association with the shrine. Officials clarified that she would be allowed to offer prayers if she submits an affidavit expressing her belief in Sanatan Dharma, similar to other visitors under the new rule.

The policy is part of a larger proposal affecting around 40–47 temples managed by the committee, including Badrinath Temple. The move has sparked a nationwide debate on religious access, constitutional rights, and the balance between preserving traditions and maintaining inclusivity.

Adding to the discussion, political and public figures have also weighed in on the matter, reflecting divided opinions. Some have supported the rule as a step toward maintaining sanctity, while others have raised concerns about its implications in a diverse society.

The controversy has gained traction particularly because Sara Ali Khan has often shared pictures from her visits to Kedarnath, portraying a deep personal connection with the place. Her case has therefore become symbolic of the larger conversation around faith, identity, and access to religious spaces.
