Raj Thackeray Launches ‘Maharashtra Next’, Slams Govt Over Debt, Drugs and Governance

Raj Thackeray has unveiled ‘Maharashtra Next’, a public-driven initiative, while criticising the state government over rising debt, drug issues and what he termed governance failures.

Mumbai | March 20, 2026: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Thursday launched ‘Maharashtra Next’, a new public participation platform aimed at preparing a comprehensive development blueprint for the state, while launching a sharp attack on the ruling government over multiple issues.

Speaking at a Gudi Padwa rally held at Shivaji Park, Thackeray said the initiative would allow citizens, experts and stakeholders to contribute ideas for the state’s future. He described the platform as an effort to involve people directly in governance and long-term planning.

The ‘Maharashtra Next’ initiative invites suggestions across sectors and aims to create a structured development roadmap, which, according to Thackeray, would be presented to the government after expert evaluation.

However, the launch was accompanied by strong criticism of the current administration. Thackeray questioned the government’s development claims, alleging that growth has been narrowly defined around infrastructure projects such as roads and flyovers, while broader issues remain unaddressed.

He also raised concerns over the state’s rising debt burden, stating that Maharashtra is under significant financial stress. Additionally, he flagged issues related to drug abuse and law and order, claiming that governance failures have led to worsening conditions in several areas.

Citing data and recent incidents, Thackeray pointed to concerns over public safety, including cases of missing children and crime, arguing that these issues require urgent attention rather than being overshadowed by large-scale project announcements.

The MNS leader emphasised that the new initiative is not merely political but aims to create a participatory model of development. He called upon citizens, especially the youth, to actively contribute ideas that can help shape a “next-generation Maharashtra.”

Political observers view the move as a strategic attempt by the MNS to reposition itself ahead of upcoming electoral battles, focusing on governance issues and public engagement. The launch has also intensified political discourse, with Thackeray’s remarks expected to draw responses from ruling alliance leaders.

The ‘Maharashtra Next’ platform is being seen as both a policy initiative and a political statement, combining public outreach with sharp criticism of the government’s performance.

With this move, Thackeray has sought to place his party at the centre of discussions around Maharashtra’s future, while raising key questions on economic management, social issues and governance priorities.
