Maharashtra government will raise commercial gas supply by 20% for hotels and eateries, offering relief amid shortages, while also expediting kerosene license renewals across the state

Mumbai | 23 March, 2026: In a significant relief for the hospitality sector, Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal announced a 20 percent increase in commercial gas supply to hotels, dhabas, and restaurants across the state.

The decision follows directives from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in response to supply disruptions caused by ongoing global tensions. Due to the crisis, establishments were receiving only 30 percent of their required gas, forcing many to limit operations and menus. With the revised allocation effective from March 23, the total supply will now reach up to 50 percent of pre-crisis levels.

The additional allocation will prioritize hotels, industrial canteens, food processing units, and dairy businesses. Government-run subsidised canteens, community kitchens, and schemes supporting migrant workers will also benefit from the move.

Officials noted that the shortage had severely impacted the industry, with nearly 40 percent of hotels across Maharashtra and about 50 percent in Mumbai reportedly shutting down temporarily. The state is home to nearly five lakh small and large hotels, including around 20,000 in Mumbai alone. The decision comes after industry bodies urged authorities, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, to ensure at least 50 percent gas supply to sustain operations.

In addition, Bhujbal directed district collectors to immediately renew pending kerosene distribution licenses without any fee. Transfers of licenses to legal heirs will also be expedited, and fair price shop operators may be authorised in areas lacking kerosene dealers.
