Veteran industrialist Dr Abhay Firodia has been selected for the 2026 Punyabhushan Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the automobile sector and his work in social and educational fields.

Pune | March 23, 2026: Renowned industrialist Dr. Abhay Firodia has been selected for the prestigious ‘Punyabhushan’ Award for 2026, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the automobile industry and his broader impact on society.

The announcement was made by the Punyabhushan Foundation, with its founder-president Dr. Satish Desai stating that the selection was finalised by a committee chaired by eminent scientist Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar. This year marks the 38th edition of the award, which honours individuals who have made remarkable contributions in their respective fields while enhancing Pune’s reputation globally.

Dr Firodia, a prominent name in India’s automobile industry, has played a significant role in shaping the sector through innovation, leadership and long-term vision. His contribution extends beyond business, with notable involvement in social, educational and cultural initiatives.

The Punyabhushan Award carries a cash prize of ₹2 lakh, along with a symbolic memento featuring a replica of young Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ploughing the land with a golden ploughshare, as well as images of Pune’s revered local deities. The award ceremony is also expected to honour injured soldiers and वीरमाता (mothers of martyrs), adding a broader dimension of recognition and respect to the event.

Over the years, the award has been conferred upon 37 distinguished personalities whose work has brought pride to Pune on national and international platforms. The honour has previously been presented by several eminent dignitaries, including former President Pranab Mukherjee, former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former Vice President Hamid Ansari, Venkaiah Naidu, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, senior leader Sharad Pawar and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Apart from his industrial achievements, Dr Firodia has been actively associated with several institutions. He serves as the president of the Gandhi National Memorial Society, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute’s governing body, and Amar Prerana Trust. His work in these organisations reflects a strong commitment to preserving cultural heritage and promoting education.

Internationally, Dr Firodia has also been recognised for strengthening trade relations between India and Germany. He has been honoured with Germany’s prestigious ‘Cross of the Order of Merit’ as well as the ‘Jain Ratna’ award for his contributions.

The selection of Dr Firodia for the 2026 Punyabhushan Award is being seen as a recognition of a lifetime of achievements spanning industry, social service and international cooperation. The award ceremony is expected to draw prominent personalities from various fields, celebrating excellence and contribution to society.
