Pune | March 25, 2026 A deeply concerning situation has emerged in Maharashtra, where as many as 93,940 women and girls have gone missing over the past two years, according to data presented in Parliament by Medha Kulkarni. Raising the issue during Zero Hour, she called for immediate and decisive government intervention to address what she described as a serious and escalating crisis. Citing figures from the state , Kulkarni highlighted that between 2024 and 2025, over 23,000 of the missing individuals were minor girls. On average, around 132 women and girls are reported missing every day in the state, indicating the scale and urgency of the problem.

Urban centres such as Pune, Mumbai, Nagpur, Raigad, Navi Mumbai, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar have reported a sharp rise in such incidents. In Pune alone, 20 minor girls aged between 13 and 17 went missing within just 15 days, raising concerns about organized human trafficking networks. Authorities suspect multiple factors behind these disappearances, including forced abductions, deception through fake romantic relationships, and misuse of social media platforms. The possibility of trafficking, exploitation, or illegal overseas transfers has also been flagged.

Kulkarni pointed out serious gaps in investigation efforts, noting that out of 45,000 cases in 2024, around 15,000 lacked substantial progress. Similarly, in 2025, nearly 13,000 cases remain unresolved. Overall, close to 28,000 women and girls are still untraced. She emphasized the need for faster action during the critical “golden hours,” deployment of advanced tracking technologies, and stronger coordination between law enforcement agencies to ensure timely rescue and prevention.
