Correcting a father’s name in Aadhaar has become more streamlined, with online options available for address-based updates, though certain corrections still require a visit to an Aadhaar centre for verification.

April 8, 2026 | New Delhi :Updating errors in Aadhaar details, including a misspelled father’s name, has become more accessible with simplified processes introduced by the Unique Identification Authority of India. However, the method depends on the type of correction required, as not all changes can be completed entirely online.

According to official guidelines, Aadhaar holders can update certain demographic details through the online Self-Service Update Portal (SSUP). This includes logging in using the Aadhaar number and OTP, selecting the field to be updated, entering correct details, uploading supporting documents and submitting the request. A unique Update Request Number (URN) is generated to track the status.

In the case of correcting a father’s name, it is important to note that Aadhaar does not directly store parental details as a primary identity field. Instead, such information is typically included as part of the address under the “care of” (C/o) field. Users can add or correct their father’s name in this section online without requiring additional documentation in some cases.

For minor corrections, users may initiate updates online by logging into the Aadhaar portal, selecting the demographic update option and uploading valid proof documents. The process also requires payment of a nominal fee and allows tracking through a service request number.

However, for major corrections-such as full name changes or significant modifications-online updates alone are not sufficient. UIDAI mandates that users visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre for biometric verification and document validation. This includes submitting identity proof, filling out an update form and completing verification procedures in person.

The offline process involves visiting the nearest Aadhaar centre, filling out the correction form, submitting relevant documents such as identity proof or relationship proof, and providing biometric authentication. Upon submission, applicants receive an acknowledgement slip with a URN to track progress.

Authorities emphasise that while online services offer convenience, users must ensure accuracy while entering details and uploading documents, as discrepancies can lead to rejection of requests. In many cases, even when initiated online, final verification may still require a physical visit for authentication.

With increasing reliance on Aadhaar for banking, government services and identification, maintaining accurate details has become essential. The updated processes aim to strike a balance between user convenience and data security, ensuring that corrections are both accessible and reliable.
