Maharashtra to Deliver Land Records on WhatsApp in Major Digital Governance Push

Maharashtra’s land records department will soon provide 7/12 and 8A extracts via WhatsApp, offering a faster, secure, and more accessible digital service for citizens and farmers across the state.

Pune | April 15, 2026: In a significant step toward digital governance, the Maharashtra government’s land records department has launched an innovative initiative to provide key land documents such as the 7/12 extract and 8A records directly through WhatsApp. The service, which will be integrated with the Mahabhumi portal, aims to make access to essential documents faster, more transparent, and convenient for citizens, particularly farmers.

According to officials, the facility will initially be rolled out on a pilot basis before being implemented across the state in phases. Citizens will be able to register their mobile numbers on the Mahabhumi portal and, upon paying a nominal fee of ₹15, receive certified land records instantly on their WhatsApp accounts.

Until now, although land records were available online, many users had to rely on physical visits to Seva centers or Maha e-Seva Kendras to obtain printed copies. This often involved additional costs, delays, and inconvenience. In several cases, users reported paying extra charges beyond the prescribed fee, while the process of downloading and transferring documents added further complications.

The new system is expected to eliminate these hurdles by delivering documents directly to users’ mobile devices. Officials say that this will not only improve accessibility but also ensure greater transparency and reduce the scope for intermediaries.

Another key feature of the initiative is real-time notifications. Citizens will receive alerts on WhatsApp regarding any changes in land records, including updates related to land measurement, mutation entries, and official notices. This is expected to enhance awareness and help landowners stay informed about any modifications concerning their property.

The service will also include access to a range of other important documents, such as property cards, certificates, and select government-issued records. Authorities believe that bringing these services onto a widely used platform like WhatsApp will significantly increase reach, especially in rural areas where smartphone usage is high but access to formal service centers may be limited.

Experts note that the move could set a precedent for other states looking to modernize their public service delivery systems. By leveraging widely used communication platforms, governments can bridge the gap between citizens and essential services more effectively.

The initiative is also expected to enhance the security of land records by reducing manual handling and limiting the chances of document misuse. With direct delivery to verified mobile numbers, authorities aim to ensure that sensitive information reaches the intended recipient safely.

As the pilot phase begins, citizens and farmers across Maharashtra to benefit from quicker, more efficient access to critical land documents, marking another milestone in the state’s ongoing digital transformation journey.
