Sanjay Raut says ‘Not Women’s Empowerment, But BJP Empowerment Bill’ Slams Centre Over Women’s Reservation Bill

16 April 2026 :Mumbai: The political atmosphere has heated up following the introduction of the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ by the central government during the special session of Parliament. The bill, which aims to provide 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies starting from the 2029 general elections, has drawn sharp criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut.
Raut launched a strong attack on the government, stating that the bill is “not about women’s empowerment but BJP empowerment.” He alleged that the move is misleading and accused the government of deceiving the public under the guise of empowering women. He questioned the timing of the bill, pointing out that there was no urgency to introduce it when assembly elections in five states are already underway. According to him, the government’s intentions are not genuine and the bill is part of a larger political strategy. “This bill has been under discussion since 2023, so why introduce it now? The government is merely trying to gain political advantage in the name of women,” he said while addressing the media in Mumbai.
Raut also raised serious concerns regarding the implementation of the reservation, particularly the proposed delimitation of constituencies. He stated that while there is no objection to implementing reservation within the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats, the government appears to be attempting to increase the number of MPs to over 800 and restructure constituencies to suit its interests. He further criticized the delay in implementation, arguing that postponing the reservation until future elections amounts to denying immediate benefits to women and is a form of deception.

Despite the BJP’s numerical strength in the Lok Sabha, Raut warned that the opposition alliance ‘INDIA’ will not allow the bill to pass easily. He asserted that opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Congress, along with Sharad Pawar’s NCP and Shiv Sena, have significant strength and will challenge the government’s move. Raut concluded by stating that the reality of the bill will become evident during voting, and the opposition will not allow what he described as a “political conspiracy” to succeed. The developments indicate a likely intense confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition over the women’s reservation bill in Parliament.
