Vidarbha is facing extreme heat with temperatures above 44°C, Akola emerging as the hottest city, and IMD issuing yellow alerts in 15 districts with heatwave conditions likely to persist.

Nagpur | April 16, 2026:
A severe heatwave has gripped large parts of Maharashtra, with the Vidarbha region experiencing extremely high temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius. According to the latest weather updates, the situation is expected to persist over the coming days, with little immediate relief in sight.

Among the worst-affected areas, Akola has recorded temperatures as high as 44.2°C, making it the hottest city in India for consecutive days. Amravati has also reported temperatures touching 44°C, while Wardha and Nagpur have registered temperatures above 43°C, indicating the intensity of the ongoing heatwave.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for at least 15 districts across the state, warning of continued heatwave conditions. Apart from Vidarbha, regions such as Marathwada and parts of Madhya Maharashtra are also experiencing high temperatures, while coastal areas including Mumbai are facing hot and humid weather conditions.

Weather experts indicate that the heatwave is likely to continue at least until the period around Akshaya Tritiya, with daytime temperatures remaining significantly above normal. The absence of rainfall and clear sky conditions have further intensified the heat, making outdoor conditions particularly harsh during peak afternoon hours.

Data suggests that several cities in Maharashtra are currently among the hottest in the country. In fact, multiple locations from Vidarbha have consistently ranked in the top temperature charts nationally, reflecting the widespread impact of the heatwave across the region.

The rising temperatures have also led to increased health concerns, with authorities urging citizens to take necessary precautions. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and in severe cases, heatstroke. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers are particularly at risk.

Officials have advised people to avoid stepping out during peak sunlight hours, stay hydrated, and wear light, breathable clothing. Schools and local administrations in some districts are also considering precautionary measures to minimize exposure to extreme weather conditions.

The ongoing heatwave highlights the growing intensity of summer conditions in the region, with experts linking such patterns to broader climatic changes. As temperatures continue to rise, authorities remain on alert, closely monitoring the situation and issuing timely advisories to safeguard public health.
