A 43-year-old Pune man dies after a speeding water tanker runs over him in Hadapsar; driver and owner booked.
April 18, 2026 | Pune: A tragic road accident in Pune has once again raised serious concerns over reckless tanker movement, after a 43-year-old man was killed in Hadapsar when a speeding water tanker ran over him.
The victim, identified as Pratik Sheth, a resident of Rasta Peth, was travelling on his two-wheeler towards Uruli Kanchan on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred around 1:45 pm near Ravidarshan Chowk in Hadapsar, when a water tanker allegedly rammed into his vehicle. The impact threw him onto the road, and he was fatally crushed under the tanker’s wheels, leading to his death on the spot.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the tanker driver did not stop immediately after the collision and instead attempted to flee the scene. Locals managed to intercept the vehicle, but the driver reportedly escaped briefly amid the chaos before being later taken into custody by the police.

Police have identified the accused driver as Avinash Jadhav, while the tanker owner has also been booked in connection with the case. Authorities have registered charges including causing death due to negligence, and further investigation is currently underway.
Preliminary findings suggest that the tanker was being driven at a high speed and may have lacked essential safety features. Officials have pointed out possible lapses such as the absence of proper safety systems and inadequate monitoring, which could have contributed to the severity of the accident.
This incident has sparked fresh outrage among residents, especially as it comes amid a series of similar accidents involving heavy vehicles in areas like Hadapsar, Kondhwa, and Wanwadi. Citizens have been increasingly raising concerns about the growing number of water tankers on city roads and the lack of strict enforcement of safety norms.
Locals have also questioned emergency response delays, with some claiming that quicker medical assistance might have improved survival chances, although the impact of the accident appears to have been severe.
The accident adds to an alarming pattern in Pune, where reckless driving by heavy vehicles, particularly water tankers, has become a major public safety issue. With rising dependency on private tanker services due to inadequate water supply in certain areas, the number of such vehicles on roads has increased significantly.
