PCMC demolishes 33 illegal structures in Wakad’s Jagtap Dairy area, clearing 6,945 sq m in a major anti-encroachment drive.
Pune, 30 April, 2026: In a decisive move against illegal constructions, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) carried out a major demolition drive in Wakad’s Jagtap Dairy area, removing 33 unauthorized structures and reclaiming significant public space. The action reflects the civic body’s intensified efforts to curb encroachments and restore planned urban infrastructure in rapidly growing suburbs of Pune.
The operation, conducted under the PCMC’s D Ward office, began around 10 am and targeted illegal constructions along both sides of the road in the Jagtap Dairy stretch-an area that has witnessed rapid and often unregulated development in recent years.
Large-Scale Encroachments Cleared
According to civic officials, the demolition drive resulted in the removal of encroachments spread across nearly 6,945 square metres. The structures primarily included tin sheds, temporary commercial setups, and unauthorized extensions built without proper permissions.
These encroachments had not only narrowed road space but also contributed to traffic congestion and safety concerns for commuters and pedestrians.
Authorities confirmed that the action was taken after due process, including identification and listing of unauthorized properties. A total of 104 properties in the Wakad area had been shortlisted for enforcement action.
However, structures protected under court stay orders or conditional legal relief were excluded from demolition, ensuring compliance with legal procedures.
Coordinated Civic Action
The drive was carried out under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi and supervised by senior officials, including Additional Commissioner Tripti Sandbhor. The operation involved coordinated efforts from the building permission and anti-encroachment departments, along with support staff and enforcement teams.
Heavy machinery was deployed to ensure swift demolition, while police personnel were present to maintain law and order during the operation.
Officials stated that such drives are essential to maintain planned development and prevent unauthorized occupation of public land.
Why Wakad Was Targeted
Wakad, particularly the Jagtap Dairy stretch, has seen rapid urban expansion due to its proximity to Hinjewadi IT Park and growing residential demand. However, this growth has also led to a rise in unauthorized structures, often encroaching on roads, footpaths, and public spaces.
Civic authorities noted that unchecked encroachments can severely impact traffic flow, emergency access, and overall urban planning. The latest action is part of a broader strategy to address these challenges systematically.
Part of a Larger Crackdown
The Wakad demolition drive is not an isolated action but part of a larger, ongoing crackdown by PCMC against illegal constructions across its jurisdiction. In recent weeks, multiple drives have been conducted in areas like Thergaon, Rahatani, and Chinchwad, where unauthorized structures ranging from tin sheds to RCC constructions have been demolished.
For instance, earlier this month, the civic body cleared over 45,000 square feet of encroachments in a separate operation involving dozens of illegal structures.
These actions underline the administration’s intent to enforce stricter compliance with building regulations and urban planning norms.
Public Impact and Reactions
While many residents have welcomed the move—especially those affected by congestion and reduced public space—such drives often raise concerns among small business operators who depend on these structures for livelihood.
Civic officials, however, maintain that enforcement is necessary and that repeated notices are issued before any demolition. Citizens are also encouraged to verify property legality before construction or purchase to avoid future losses.
What’s Next?
PCMC has indicated that the crackdown will continue in phases, with a focus on clearing key road stretches and high-density zones where encroachments disrupt daily life. More areas in Wakad and nearby localities are expected to come under scrutiny in the coming weeks.
Urban experts believe that while demolition drives are essential, long-term solutions must include stricter monitoring, faster approvals for legal constructions, and improved public awareness.
