Indian Army conducted ‘Op Netra 1.0’ eye camp in Leh, screening 950 patients and performing 214 surgeries, showcasing high-altitude healthcare excellence and civil-military coordination in remote Ladakh regions

Leh | May 01, 2026: In a major step towards strengthening healthcare access in remote regions, the Indian Army successfully conducted a four-day advanced surgical eye camp, ‘Op Netra 1.0,’ at 153 General Hospital in Leh from April 27 to 30, 2026. The initiative focused on delivering specialized eye care services in high-altitude conditions and addressing critical medical needs across Ladakh.

The camp was inaugurated by General Officer Commanding (GOC) 14 Corps, Lieutenant General Hitesh Bhalla. It witnessed participation from patients across multiple districts of Ladakh, including remote areas such as Chushul, Hanle, Durbuk, Demchok, Fukche, Drass, Zanskar, Batalik, Chumathang, and Turtuk. In total, 950 patients were screened during the camp.A team of medical specialists, led by Brigadier (Dr.) Sanjay Kumar Mishra, carried out 214 advanced surgical procedures.

These included 197 complex cataract surgeries and 10 vitreo-retinal interventions, along with other specialized treatments such as minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, vitrectomy, and intraocular lens procedures. Notably, 15 patients who were completely visually impaired regained their vision through these interventions.

One of the key highlights of the camp was the launch of the indigenously developed ‘Op Netra App,’ designed to streamline patient management. The application enables digital record-keeping, improves diagnostic precision, and facilitates efficient surgical scheduling using QR code-based identification, enhancing both patient safety and operational efficiency.

The mission forms part of a broader nationwide initiative that has already delivered more than 2,500 sight-restoring surgeries since November 2025 through similar camps held in cities including Udhampur, Dehradun, Jaipur, Bagdogra, and Gorakhpur. The Indian Air Force supported the operation by airlifting advanced medical equipment to Leh, ensuring high standards of care despite challenging terrain and altitude. The camp concluded with a closing ceremony attended by senior officials, including the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, VK Saxena, and Northern Command’s General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma. The initiative highlights the continued focus on expanding quality healthcare services to underserved regions, regardless of geographical challenges
