May 2, 2026 | Pune: The ecological health of Pashan Lake took center stage yesterday as Mayor Manjusha Deepak Nagpure conducted a high-level on-site inspection following distressing reports of mass fish mortality. The visit, aimed at addressing the deteriorating water quality of the vital freshwater body, has triggered an immediate, large-scale restoration drive led by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

During the inspection, the Mayor witnessed the severe choking of the lake by invasive water hyacinth, which has depleted oxygen levels and devastated the local aquatic ecosystem. In response, the civic administration has deployed specialized heavy machinery, including spider machines, poclain excavators, and JCBs, to clear the vegetation on a war footing. This mechanical intervention is designed to physically restore the water surface and prevent further suffocation of the lake’s remaining biodiversity.

However, Mayor Nagpure emphasized that surface cleaning is merely a temporary solution to a deeper systemic issue. “The removal of water hyacinth alone will not suffice if we do not stop the source of the pollution,” the Mayor stated during the visit. To address the root cause, she conducted a detailed audit of the nearby Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) that discharges water into the lake. Accompanying her were senior officials from the Environment Department, including Deputy Commissioner Kishori Shinde and Environment Officer Ganesh Sonune, who were tasked with identifying lapses in the filtration process.

Strict instructions were issued to the engineering team to expedite all pending maintenance work and implement immediate technical improvements in the treatment cycle. The Mayor’s mandate ensures that only properly treated water enters the reservoir, aiming to prevent recurring ecological damage. With the deployment of intensive resources and a focus on infrastructure accountability, the PMC aims to revive Pashan Lake as a sustainable sanctuary for the city’s flora and fauna.
