Mumbai | May 6, 2026: In a significant boost to tourism infrastructure in Maharashtra, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has approved an allocation of ₹200.50 crore in its 2026–27 budget for the development of a glass skywalk in the hill station of Lonavala. The ambitious project, which has been under discussion for several years, is considered one of the key tourism initiatives earlier envisioned by former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar.

The funding announcement was made during the PMRDA general body meeting held in Mumbai, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, along with senior officials of the authority.

According to officials, the proposed glass skywalk is expected to become a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from across Maharashtra and other parts of the country. The project is being positioned as part of a broader tourism development plan that includes adventure sports facilities, improved public amenities, and large-scale road infrastructure upgrades to enhance accessibility in and around Lonavala.

Authorities stated that the project may also receive additional financial assistance in the coming months. PMRDA officials indicated that there is an expectation of further funding support, with proposals being discussed for contributions of ₹100 crore each from the Union government and the District Planning Committee. If approved, the combined funding would significantly accelerate the execution of the project.

The glass skywalk project is aimed at strengthening the region’s tourism economy while creating employment opportunities through construction activities and increased tourist footfall. Officials also emphasized that the development will focus on ensuring safety measures and maintaining the ecological balance of the hill station.

With the budget allocation now confirmed, the PMRDA is expected to initiate the next phase of planning and tendering, bringing the long-awaited tourism landmark closer to becoming a reality.
