Pune | May 6, 2026: Even after the approval of nearly ₹200 crore for major drainage improvement works, the ground reality remains alarming as most projects are still incomplete just weeks before the monsoon. The slow pace of work has raised serious concerns among citizens, with fears that flood-like situations could once again occur in low-lying areas if heavy rainfall begins early.

According to sources, the sanctioned funds were meant to strengthen drainage infrastructure and reduce the risk of waterlogging and flooding. However, despite the financial approval, actual progress on-site has been minimal. Out of a total of 88 locations identified for essential works, boundary wall construction has reportedly started at only eight places. At many remaining sites, work has either not begun or is limited to paperwork and preliminary procedures.

Officials revealed that in around 33 locations, only survey work has been completed so far, indicating that the project is far behind schedule. Citizens and local representatives have questioned why such a large amount of funding has not translated into timely execution, especially when monsoon preparations are expected to be completed well in advance.

Experts have warned that if the drainage strengthening and safety wall work is not completed quickly, even the first spell of heavy rainfall could lead to overflowing nullahs, water entering residential areas, and major disruption to traffic and daily life. Residents living near vulnerable stretches have expressed frustration, claiming that every year authorities announce funds, but the situation remains unchanged when rains arrive.

Sources further stated that delays are being attributed to technical approvals, slow tender processes, and lack of coordination between departments. However, critics argue that the administration appears active only on paper, while actual implementation continues to lag.

With monsoon just around the corner, the pending works have once again brought the city’s flood preparedness under scrutiny. Citizens are demanding immediate action and strict monitoring to ensure that drainage-related projects are completed without further delay.
