Union Home Minister Amit Shah pledged stronger border security and strict action against infiltration while BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was chosen as West Bengal’s next Chief Minister after the party’s victory.

May 9, 2026 | Kolkata:Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday asserted that illegal infiltration and cross-border smuggling would face stringent action under the BJP government, declaring that the party remained committed to making the country free from infiltrators.
Addressing the meeting of newly elected BJP legislators in Kolkata, Shah said border security would be further strengthened now that the BJP was in power in Tripura, Assam, and West Bengal. He emphasized that the government would take decisive steps against illegal immigration and trafficking activities along the eastern borders. During the meeting, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was officially elected as the leader of the legislature party, paving the way for him to become the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. His oath-taking ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday morning.
Shah also paid tribute to 321 BJP workers who allegedly lost their lives during years of political violence in the state. Calling the party’s rise in West Bengal a difficult and emotional journey, he said the sacrifices of party workers would never be forgotten. He further remarked that the level of political violence witnessed in West Bengal and Kerala was unlike anything seen elsewhere in the country.
Suvendu Adhikari’s elevation marks a significant political shift in Bengal politics. The 55-year-old leader secured victories from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur constituencies in the Assembly elections. His win over former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur emerged as one of the most closely watched political contests in the country.

Adhikari began his political career with the Congress in 1995 before gaining prominence during the 2007 Nandigram movement. He joined the BJP in December 2020 after leaving the Trinamool Congress and later became the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly. Political observers believe Adhikari’s appointment signals the beginning of a new political phase in West Bengal under BJP leadership.
