The historic residence of the legendary ‘Geet Ramayan’ creator Gadima , G.D. Madgulkar, has become the center of a bitter legal and emotional battle among his descendants over its potential sale.

Pune | May 12, 2026: The legacy of the “Modern Valmiki,” G.D. Madgulkar (Gadima), is currently embroiled in a domestic “Mahabharata” as his grandson, Sumitra Madgulkar, publicly alleged that family members are attempting to demolish and sell the iconic ‘Panchvati’ bungalow to developers. Located in Wakdewadi, this residence is considered a cultural landmark where the immortal verses of the Geet Ramayan and countless cinematic gems were penned. Sumitra took to social media to claim that relatives are prioritizing financial gain over heritage, even alleging threats to his safety for opposing the demolition.

However, the dispute took a sharp turn when Sumitra’s mother, Sheetal Shridhar Madgulkar, issued a scathing rebuttal on social media. She accused her son of hypocrisy, claiming he remained absent and unsupportive during the bungalow’s essential repairs and maintenance. Sheetal further alleged that it was Sumitra himself who had previously sought out builders for the property. Amidst these trading accusations, Gadima’s son and veteran writer Anand Madgulkar appealed for privacy, stating that the matter is strictly a family concern and should not be politicized or sensationalized by outsiders.

The literary and cultural circles of Maharashtra have expressed deep concern over the row, emphasizing that while a memorial is being constructed in Kothrud, the ‘Panchvati’ bungalow holds irreplaceable sentimental value as the original site of Gadima’s creative genius. As the accusations fly between mother and son, the fate of this historic structure remains uncertain. While the family insists on a private resolution, the public outcry for the preservation of Gadima’s architectural heritage continues to grow, highlighting the struggle between urban development and cultural preservation.
