US President Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on Thursday for a crucial summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking the first visit by a sitting American president to China in nearly a decade. The high-profile meeting comes at a time of growing geopolitical tensions, global economic uncertainty and concerns surrounding the ongoing Iran conflict.

Chinese officials described 2026 as a “historic and landmark year” for relations between the two superpowers, signalling hopes for greater stability after years of trade disputes and strategic rivalry. Xi welcomed Trump with a formal state ceremony in Beijing as both sides prepared for two days of intensive negotiations.

The summit agenda is expected to focus heavily on trade relations and the continuation of the temporary trade truce reached between Washington and Beijing last year. Discussions are also centred on semiconductor restrictions, artificial intelligence cooperation, rare earth exports and access to Chinese markets for American companies. Investors across global markets are closely watching the meeting for signs of long-term economic stability between the two nations.

The Iran war has emerged as another major topic during the talks. Trump has reportedly urged China to use its influence over Tehran to help stabilise the Middle East situation and reopen critical global oil shipping routes. However, analysts believe Beijing may avoid taking a direct role in pressuring Iran despite its economic interests in the region.

Taiwan and military tensions in the Indo-Pacific are also expected to feature prominently during discussions. Trump has indicated that US arms sales to Taiwan and concerns over Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai’s imprisonment would be raised directly with Xi during the summit.

Several major American business leaders, including Elon Musk and Jensen Huang, are accompanying Trump during the China visit, highlighting the growing importance of artificial intelligence and technology partnerships in US-China relations.

Global markets and diplomatic observers are now closely monitoring whether the Beijing summit can reduce tensions between the world’s two largest economies or simply delay deeper geopolitical confrontations in the months ahead.
