The southwest monsoon is racing toward the Indian mainland, expected to touch the Andaman Sea within 48 hours, even as Maharashtra braces for a dual weather pattern of intense heat and localized thunderstorms.

Pune | May 15, 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has delivered a significant “good news” update, confirming that conditions have become highly favorable for the monsoon’s arrival over the South Andaman Sea and parts of the Bay of Bengal by May 16. A well-marked low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal is providing the necessary momentum for the seasonal winds. While the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are already experiencing heavy rainfall and winds reaching 60 km/h, the ripple effects are being felt across the subcontinent.

In Maharashtra, the weather remains a study in contrasts. For the next five days, a severe heatwave is expected to persist, particularly in Vidarbha and North Maharashtra. On May 14, temperatures skyrocketed across the state, with Akola recording a blistering 45.9°C, followed by Wardha at 45.5°C and Jalgaon at 45.3°C. The IMD predicts that while humidity and “warm nights” will continue through May 16, a gradual temperature drop of 2 to 3 degrees is anticipated between May 17 and May 20.

Despite the scorching daytime highs, relief is in sight for Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada. A yellow alert has been issued for May 15 and 16, predicting light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h. This pre-monsoon activity is expected to provide temporary respite from the humid conditions currently gripping Mumbai and Pune.

Meanwhile, a “Red Alert” has been issued for the coastal regions of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu due to extreme weather conditions. As the monsoon progresses, the central government and state disaster management cells remain on high alert to manage the transition from the peak summer heat to the impending rainy season.
