The Election Commission has initiated Phase 3 of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) across 16 states, deploying thousands of officers for house-to-house verification to ensure the nation’s electoral rolls are flawless.

New Delhi | May 15, 2026 : In a major move to ensure electoral integrity, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially transitioned into Phase 3 of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This massive administrative exercise covers 16 states and three Union Territories, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Delhi. Unlike routine annual updates, the SIR is a rigorous, field-heavy operation designed to synchronize voter data with the ongoing house-listing process of the national Census, ensuring that no eligible citizen is left behind while duplicate or deceased entries are purged.
In Maharashtra, the schedule is set to gain momentum on June 20, with the critical door-to-door enumeration phase slated for June 30 to July 29, 2026. During this period, nearly 98,000 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit households across the state to verify the details of approximately 9.86 crore electors. This “intensive” nature of the revision the first of its scale in over two decades focuses on family mapping and digital linking to eliminate “ghost voters” and address discrepancies caused by rapid urbanization and migration.

The ECI has emphasized a participative approach, inviting political parties to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to oversee the transparency of the field visits. In Maharashtra alone, over 96,000 such agents are expected to assist in the verification. Following the field surveys, a draft electoral roll will be published on August 5, 2026, opening a month-long window for citizens to file claims or objections.
The final consolidated voter list for the state is scheduled for publication on October 7, 2026, with October 1 serving as the qualifying date for age eligibility. This overhaul is considered a prerequisite for the upcoming assembly cycles, ensuring that the democratic foundation of the state remains robust, updated, and transparent.
