Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in the Netherlands on Saturday as part of the second leg of his ongoing five-nation international tour, with a major focus on expanding India’s strategic and economic ties with the European Union and key European nations.
During the visit, PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and also meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. The discussions are expected to cover crucial sectors including semiconductors, green hydrogen, water management, clean energy, innovation, defence cooperation and emerging technologies.
The Netherlands remains one of India’s most important European economic partners. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, bilateral trade between the two countries stood at nearly USD 27.8 billion during 2024-25, while the Netherlands is also among India’s largest foreign investors in Europe.
Officials believe the visit comes at a strategically important time as India continues strengthening its engagement with Europe amid shifting global economic and geopolitical dynamics. PM Modi’s discussions are also expected to build momentum around the recently concluded India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, widely described by leaders as the “mother of all deals.”
Experts say India is particularly interested in Dutch expertise in semiconductor manufacturing, sustainable urban planning and advanced water management systems, areas considered critical for India’s long-term infrastructure and industrial growth.

The Netherlands visit follows Modi’s stop in the United Arab Emirates, where India signed multiple agreements related to defence, energy and infrastructure cooperation. The Prime Minister will next travel to Sweden, Norway and Italy as part of a broader diplomatic outreach aimed at strengthening India’s global partnerships.
Diplomatic observers believe the tour signals India’s growing push to position itself as a major strategic and economic partner for Europe in areas ranging from technology and trade to clean energy and global security cooperation.
