Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi over an incident during Modi’s visit to Norway, alleging that the Prime Minister avoided answering questions from international journalists. The remarks came after a video surfaced online showing a Norwegian journalist attempting to ask Modi a question while he appeared to move away without responding.

Sharing the clip on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi questioned the impact such moments have on India’s global image. He accused Modi of “panicking” in front of the media and claimed that a leader with nothing to hide should not fear questions from journalists.

The controversy emerged during Modi’s ongoing multi-nation diplomatic tour, which includes participation in the India–Nordic Summit in Oslo and bilateral meetings with Nordic leaders. The Norwegian journalist in the viral video was reportedly attempting to ask the Prime Minister about press freedom and media access before Modi moved ahead without taking questions.

Congress leaders quickly amplified the issue online, with senior party figures using the episode to renew criticism of the Prime Minister’s media engagement style. Opposition leaders have repeatedly accused Modi of avoiding open press conferences and limiting unscripted interactions with journalists both in India and abroad.

The BJP, however, has often dismissed such criticism, arguing that Modi communicates directly with citizens through speeches, interviews and digital platforms. Supporters of the Prime Minister also defended the Norway incident online, claiming diplomatic schedules and security protocols often restrict impromptu media interactions during foreign visits.

The viral video has since triggered intense political debate on social media, with supporters and critics of both leaders engaging in heated discussions over press freedom, political image and leadership transparency.
