Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rome on Tuesday night for the final leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour after concluding the India-Nordic Summit in Norway. During the visit, Modi is scheduled to hold high-level bilateral talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella as both countries look to deepen strategic and economic cooperation.

The visit is being viewed as a major diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening the growing India-Italy partnership across sectors including trade, defence, clean energy, technology, maritime cooperation, and infrastructure connectivity. Officials said discussions are expected to focus heavily on the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a major international connectivity initiative linking India with Europe through the Gulf region.

Upon his arrival in Italy, PM Modi received a warm welcome from Italian leaders and members of the Indian diaspora. Giorgia Meloni also shared a selfie with Modi on social media, referring to him as “my friend,” reviving the widely popular “Melodi” diplomatic moment that had gained global attention during the G7 Summit in Italy last year.

According to diplomatic sources, both nations are expected to review the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029 and discuss expanding bilateral trade targets, investment cooperation, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, higher education, and energy partnerships. Reports suggest India and Italy may also sign agreements in sectors such as maritime transport, agriculture, museum collaboration, and anti-financial crime cooperation.

The Rome visit marks Modi’s first standalone bilateral visit to Italy and comes amid rapidly evolving global geopolitical and economic challenges. Analysts believe the meeting reflects the growing importance of India-Italy ties within Europe and the Mediterranean region.

Following the bilateral engagements, PM Modi is also expected to visit the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization to reaffirm India’s commitment toward global food security and multilateral cooperation.
