Kolkata| June 4, 2026:The political landscape of West Bengal has been thrown into turmoil following an unprecedented internal rebellion within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). A breakaway faction consisting of 58 MLAs has formally petitioned Assembly Speaker Rayendranath Bose, demanding that Reitbrat Banerjee who was previously expelled from the party be appointed as the Leader of the Opposition, alongside Akhrunjzaman as the Chief Whip. In a move that signals a definitive fracture in the party’s structure, the Speaker has officially recognized these appointments, effectively formalizing the split within the TMC.

The rebellion is a severe blow to Mamata Banerjee, as the 58 signatories represent more than two-thirds of the party’s 78-member legislative strength. By securing this majority, the rebel faction has strategically maneuvered to avoid the legal repercussions of the anti-defection law. The internal crisis was further exacerbated by deep-seated resentment against the operational style of party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Tensions had been simmering for weeks, particularly following allegations of forged signatures on a previous petition, an incident that has since triggered a formal CID investigation.

In response to the sudden upheaval, the TMC leadership issued an official statement via social media, announcing the dissolution of all party committees. The party has declared that it will undergo a period of rigorous self-reflection, performance reviews, and organizational evaluation before announcing a new leadership structure. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has adopted a cautious stance, describing the chaos as a manifestation of internal friction within the TMC and refraining from immediate commentary. As the state government faces this legislative challenge, the rebel group is expected to stake a formal claim over the party’s official election symbol. This political maneuvering has left the state’s administration in a state of high alert, as the TMC attempts to navigate its most significant leadership crisis in years while the legislative assembly prepares for a volatile monsoon session.
