Pune| June 4, 2026: Facing the prospect of a challenging summer, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is preparing to implement a strict water management policy across the city. Following a cautious forecast from the India Meteorological Department, which has predicted a potentially deficient monsoon season influenced by El Niño and IOD factors, the municipal water supply department has formally submitted a proposal for alternate-day water rationing to Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram for final approval. The administration aims to ensure that existing water reserves in the Khadakwasla dam chain and surrounding reservoirs remain sufficient to meet the city’s drinking water requirements through July 31.

The proposal follows an extensive review of the current water storage, which currently stands at approximately 10.48 TMC across key reservoirs, including the Khadakwasla chain, Bhama Askhed, and Pavana. While irrigation authorities had initially advised a 15% monthly reduction in consumption, the looming uncertainty of the rains has prompted the municipal administration to consider more aggressive conservation measures. Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has already convened meetings with senior water supply officials to evaluate the current usage patterns and the potential impact of the proposed rationing.

According to Nandkishore Jagtap, head of the water supply department, the shift to alternate-day supply is estimated to yield a 25% reduction in overall water consumption. While the transition may pose logistical challenges, such as maintaining pipeline pressure and ensuring equitable distribution, municipal authorities maintain that this proactive measure is essential to avoid acute shortages in the coming months. If approved, the new schedule is expected to be implemented within the next week. Officials have urged residents to cooperate with these conservation efforts, emphasizing that the primary objective is to maintain sustainable supply levels until the arrival of the monsoon season. The final decision remains subject to the commissioner’s formal authorization, which is expected shortly as the city braces for a strategic shift in water distribution.
