The debate over the future of India’s senior cricket stars has intensified after former India batter and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar stated that selection for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup should depend solely on performance and fitness rather than past achievements or reputation.
Speaking about veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Manjrekar acknowledged their immense contribution to Indian cricket but stressed that age should neither guarantee nor prevent selection. Instead, he said the deciding factors must be consistent form, physical fitness and the ability to perform at the highest level when the tournament arrives.
Both Kohli and Rohit have played pivotal roles in India’s success across formats over the past decade, winning multiple ICC tournaments and setting numerous batting records. Their experience remains invaluable, but with the next ODI World Cup still over a year away, selectors are expected to closely monitor their performances in international cricket before making any long-term decisions.
Manjrekar noted that the Indian team possesses a growing pool of talented young players capable of competing for places in the national side. He believes healthy competition will ensure that only the most deserving players earn World Cup selection, regardless of their stature or seniority. The former batter added that maintaining high fitness standards has become increasingly important in modern cricket, especially in a demanding 50-over tournament.

His remarks come amid ongoing discussions about India’s squad planning for the 2027 World Cup, with fans and former cricketers divided over whether experienced campaigners should continue or gradually make way for the next generation. While some experts have backed Kohli and Rohit to remain central to India’s plans, others argue that selections must be based purely on merit.
With several bilateral series and ICC events scheduled before the World Cup, both players will have ample opportunities to demonstrate their form and fitness. Ultimately, the selectors are expected to base their decisions on performances rather than reputation as India prepares for another bid to reclaim the ODI World Cup.
