Massive Landslide Triggers Traffic Chaos on Mumbai-Pune Expressway
A major landslide triggered by relentless torrential rainfall severely disrupted traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, leading to a complete standstill on the critical Pune-to-Mumbai corridor.

July 6, 2026 | Khopoli: A massive landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall blocked the vital ‘Missing Link’ project section of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Monday, bringing all Pune-bound and Mumbai-bound vehicular traffic to a grinding halt. The incident, which occurred during peak transit hours, sent large boulders and tons of mud cascading down the fractured hillside directly onto the main carriageway. Fortunately, no immediate casualties or vehicular damage were reported, though the collapse triggered a massive gridlock, with thousands of vehicles stranded in tailbacks stretching over several kilometers into the ghat section.
Highway Safety Police, disaster management teams, and emergency personnel from the Infrastructure Infrastructure Development company (IRB) rushed to the scene with heavy earth-moving machinery to initiate clearing operations. However, persistent downpours and low visibility in the high-altitude terrain have severely hampered the pace of removing the debris. Officials stated that clearing the heavy boulders remains a highly precarious task due to the structural instability of the loose soil uphill, raising fears of secondary rockfalls.
In light of the indefinite closure of the Expressway stretch, the state administration and local highway authorities issued an urgent travel advisory urging motorists to completely defer non-essential travel. Commuters currently en route are being actively diverted to alternative networks, including the Old Mumbai-Pune National Highway (NH-48) and the Lonavala-Khandala bypass road. Navigating these alternative routes has also proven sluggish as they face a sudden influx of diverted heavy vehicles and local flooding. Traffic police have deployed additional personnel at key diversion choke points to regulate the bottleneck and assist stranded travelers.
