Pune Police Deploy AI, Drones and Smart Surveillance for Secure Ashadhi Wari Palkhi
Pune Police have introduced an extensive technology-driven security network featuring AI surveillance, GPS tracking, drones, facial recognition and advanced analytics to ensure safer crowd management during the Ashadhi Wari Palkhi procession.

Pune | 07 July, 2026: As lakhs of devotees prepare to participate in the Ashadhi Wari Palkhi procession, Pune Police have strengthened security arrangements by deploying an advanced technology-based monitoring system aimed at ensuring the safety of pilgrims, effective crowd management and smooth movement throughout the procession.
The comprehensive security framework combines artificial intelligence, real-time surveillance and smart communication tools to monitor every stage of the procession. A total of 12 GPS devices have been installed at key points, including the front and rear of the procession and on the Palkhi Raths of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj. This enables police officials to track the procession’s movement, monitor route progress and estimate arrival timings in real time.
Surveillance has also been significantly enhanced with 226 CCTV cameras positioned across both Palkhi routes. Live feeds from these cameras, along with CCTV systems installed on the Palkhi Raths, are integrated with the city’s Command and Control Centre, allowing continuous monitoring throughout the event.
To strengthen security further, 28 AI-enabled Facial Recognition System cameras have been deployed to help trace missing persons, children and senior citizens while also identifying wanted criminals. AI-based crowd density monitoring will generate instant alerts whenever crowd levels exceed predefined safety limits, allowing authorities to respond promptly.

Advanced video analytics will monitor unattended objects, smoke, fire, violence, weapon detection, traffic congestion, illegal parking and other potential risks. Drone surveillance will provide aerial monitoring of crowd movement, while dedicated mobile surveillance vehicles equipped with cameras, recording systems and public address facilities will function as on-ground control units.
More than 100 public address systems installed across 500 strategic locations will be used to issue real-time advisories and emergency announcements. Security has been further reinforced with anti-drone systems, over 350 wireless communication devices for police personnel and extensive anti-sabotage screening through metal detectors at key entry points, Visawa locations and halting points.
With these integrated technologies working together, Pune Police aim to deliver a safe, secure and efficiently managed Ashadhi Wari Palkhi procession for devotees across the city.
