Major Landslide Near Kwar Hydropower Project Buries Vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar
Heavy rainfall triggered a massive landslide near the 540 MW Kwar Hydropower Project in Kishtwar, burying several vehicles under debris. Authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported despite extensive damage.

July 7, 2026 | Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir: A massive landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall struck the area near the 540 MW Kwar Hydropower Project in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, burying several parked and moving vehicles under tonnes of rocks and debris.
The landslide occurred close to the under-construction hydropower project on the Chenab River, causing extensive damage to vehicles and disrupting movement in the area. Rescue teams and heavy machinery were deployed immediately, with clearance operations continuing late into the night to remove debris and retrieve the trapped vehicles.
Despite the scale of the incident, authorities confirmed that there was no loss of life. Union Minister of State and local Member of Parliament Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that no casualties had been reported and that emergency agencies responded swiftly to secure the affected site.
The Kwar Hydropower Project, located nearly 28 kilometres from Kishtwar town, is being developed by Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited and is one of the key hydroelectric projects in the region. The landslide has once again highlighted the vulnerability of infrastructure projects in the Himalayan belt during the monsoon season, where intense rainfall frequently triggers slope failures and road blockages.

Meanwhile, neighbouring Doda district has also been affected by incessant rainfall, with flash floods disrupting normal life and causing damage to roads, public infrastructure and residential areas. Local authorities remain on high alert as weather agencies continue to forecast heavy rainfall across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days.
Officials have advised residents and commuters to avoid unnecessary travel through landslide-prone stretches until weather conditions improve and road clearance operations are completed.
