The Maharashtra government has approved a comprehensive expansion of nursing education to address the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals and provide affordable, high-quality education to students through government institutions.

Announcing the decision in the State Assembly, Medical Education Minister Hasan Mushrif said the Cabinet has sanctioned the ambitious initiative to strengthen the state’s healthcare workforce by increasing the availability of trained nursing staff.

The government has approved a capital expenditure of ₹491.91 crore for the project, along with an annual recurring expenditure of ₹12.58 crore. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance nursing education infrastructure while improving the quality of public healthcare services across Maharashtra.

As part of the expansion, eight existing Government General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) colleges located at GT Hospital and St. George’s Hospital in Mumbai, Dhule, Solapur, Ambajogai, Akola, Nagpur (IGMC), and Sangli will be upgraded. Each institution will introduce a new Government B.Sc. Nursing College with an annual intake capacity of 100 students.

The Cabinet has also approved the establishment of ten new Government B.Sc. Nursing colleges in Chandrapur, Sindhudurg, Yavatmal, Alibag, Ratnagiri, Amravati, Dharashiv, Gadchiroli, Palghar, and Ahilyanagar, expanding access to nursing education in underserved regions.

In addition, proposals to establish similar nursing colleges in Thane, Satara, Nashik, Jalna, Buldhana, Parbhani, Hingoli, Washim, Wardha, and Gondia will be submitted to the Central Government for approval.

The government has also decided to double the intake capacity from 50 to 100 seats at five existing Government B.Sc. Nursing colleges located at JJ Hospital in Mumbai, Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune, and Nanded.

The state government believes the expansion will help bridge the shortage of qualified nursing professionals, improve healthcare delivery, and offer economically weaker students access to affordable professional education through government-run institutions.
