PMC Standing Committee Members Propose Week-Long Cleanliness Drive from July 22 in Pune

A proposal has been submitted to the Pune Municipal Corporation to launch a week-long cleanliness campaign from July 22, aiming to improve sanitation, public participation and environmental awareness across the city.

A proposal has been submitted before the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Standing Committee to organise a week-long “Swachhata Abhiyan Saptah” (Cleanliness Campaign Week) beginning July 22 across the city. The resolution has been jointly moved by Standing Committee members Suhas Tingre and Amol Balwadkar, seeking a coordinated civic initiative to enhance cleanliness, public hygiene and environmental awareness in Pune.

According to the proposal, the campaign is intended to encourage systematic sanitation efforts and promote disciplined civic practices through active participation from municipal authorities and citizens. If approved, the drive will be implemented through all regional offices of the PMC and will focus on improving the cleanliness of roads, footpaths, public squares, schools, gardens, public toilets, drainage systems, garbage collection centres and other public spaces.

The resolution also calls for widespread public participation by involving residents, educational institutions, non-governmental organisations, housing societies, traders’ associations and social organisations. Awareness campaigns on waste segregation, environmental conservation and maintaining public hygiene are proposed to be organised throughout the week to encourage long-term behavioural change among citizens.

The members who moved the resolution said that cleanliness, discipline and efficient urban administration should remain central to Pune’s civic development. They emphasised that a collective effort involving both the civic administration and the public is essential to make the campaign successful and sustainable.

The proposal highlights the need for regular sanitation initiatives alongside awareness programmes to improve the city’s overall cleanliness standards. Civic officials are expected to consider the resolution before finalising the implementation plan for the campaign.

If approved, the week-long initiative is expected to strengthen public engagement in maintaining cleaner neighbourhoods while supporting the Pune Municipal Corporation’s ongoing efforts to improve urban sanitation and environmental management. The campaign is also likely to encourage greater civic responsibility and reinforce the importance of waste management and cleanliness as part of everyday public life.
