AAP faces major setback as seven Rajya Sabha MPs, led by Raghav Chadha, revolt against Arvind Kejriwal and decide to join BJP, raising serious questions over party leadership
New Delhi, 25 April | 2026: In a significant political development, the Aam Aadmi Party is facing a major internal crisis after seven of its Rajya Sabha MPs reportedly rebelled and decided to switch sides. The group is led by senior leader Raghav Chadha, dealing a strong blow to party chief Arvind Kejriwal.
Along with Chadha, leaders such as Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh and Swati Maliwal are among those who have resigned from the party. Reports indicate that the group has submitted signed letters to the Rajya Sabha Chairman and is preparing to merge with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The rebellion is significant as AAP currently has 10 MPs in the Rajya Sabha, and nearly two-thirds breaking away allows them to avoid disqualification under the anti-defection law by forming a separate group before merging with another party.
Raghav Chadha announced the decision during a press conference, stating that the party had drifted away from its core principles and values over time. The move comes amid recent internal changes, including leadership reshuffles and enforcement actions involving some leaders.

Reacting sharply, Arvind Kejriwal accused the BJP of orchestrating the split and claimed it was a betrayal of public trust, particularly in Punjab. The development is expected to have wider political implications and could deepen the challenges for AAP in the coming months.
