The High Court has granted bail to convicted accused Sharad Kalaskar and suspended his life sentence, raising doubts over identification evidence and eyewitness credibility in the Dabholkar murder case
Mumbai | 30 April 2026: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Sharad Kalaskar, one of the convicted accused in the murder of Narendra Dabholkar, while also suspending his life sentence pending appeal.
The bench of Justices Ajay Gadkari and Ranjit Singh Bhosale allowed Kalaskar’s plea challenging the trial court verdict and seeking suspension of his sentence until the appeal is decided. The court observed that there were questions regarding his identification as one of the assailants and also raised concerns over the reliability of two key eyewitnesses.

Earlier, a Pune sessions court had convicted Kalaskar along with co-accused Sachin Andure and sentenced both to life imprisonment. Kalaskar had approached the High Court seeking relief, arguing that the evidence against him required further scrutiny.
While granting bail, the High Court clarified that a life sentence can be suspended during the pendency of an appeal if circumstances justify such relief. The court also rejected the prosecution’s request to stay the bail order, stating that the doubts raised in the case could not be ignored at this stage.
In the same trial, the sessions court had acquitted three other accused Virendra Tawde, Vikram Bhave, and Sanjeev Punalekar. Their acquittal has been challenged in the High Court by Dabholkar’s daughter, Mukta Dabholkar.
Additionally, the family has also contested the trial court’s decision to acquit the accused under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.The case, which has drawn nationwide attention, continues to remain under judicial scrutiny as multiple appeals are currently pending before the High Court.
