The Central Government has assured a high-level delegation from Maharashtra that a definitive decision on pressing onion trade issues and farmer grievances will be announced within the next ten days
NEW DELHI | May 28, 2026: A high-profile coalition of state leadership held a pivotal summit with Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah in the national capital to address the agricultural crisis impacting Maharashtra’s farmers. Following the extensive deliberations, it was confirmed that the Union Government will roll out a comprehensive resolution packet within ten days, offering major relief to the agrarian sector.
The high-stakes meeting was attended by prominent Union ministers, including Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Public Distribution Minister Pralhad Joshi. The state delegation was led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, alongside Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, and several state cabinet ministers and agricultural cooperative leaders. The primary objective of the convergence was to restructure current procurement protocols and stabilize fluctuating domestic market dynamics.

A major breakthrough achieved during the dialogue is the optimization of state-sponsored procurement frameworks. The central leadership formally accepted the state’s demand that direct onion procurement managed by NAFED and NCCF must bypass intermediaries and operate directly via grassroot farmers. Furthermore, discussions are underway to aggressively scale up procurement volumes from the existing two lakh tonnes to an ambitious ten lakh tonnes to prevent localized market crashes.

Addressing supply distortions, the center accepted a proposal to levy an export surcharge on domestic onion seeds. Due to current high-volume seed exports, local farmers faced diminished output quality, which this policy aims to curb. Additionally, talks centered on further raising the base procurement price of onions beyond the recent adjustment to fifteen rupees and eighty paise. Crucially, federal officials clarified during the briefing that while technical regulations exist on seeds, there is absolutely no active embargo on the international export of commercial onions, paving the way for stable regional trade.
