Devendra Fadnavis has become Maharashtra’s third longest-serving Chief Minister, surpassing Sharad Pawar’s cumulative tenure. Fadnavis has now completed around 2,430 days in office, marking another milestone in the state’s political history.
Devendra Fadnavis has overtaken Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) president Sharad Pawar in the list of Maharashtra’s longest-serving Chief Ministers, becoming the third longest-serving leader to hold the state’s top political office.
Fadnavis first took oath as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister on October 31, 2014, and completed a full five-year term until 2019. Following the Assembly elections, he briefly returned to office on November 23, 2019, during the much-discussed early morning swearing-in ceremony. However, that government lasted only around 80 hours before stepping down.
He assumed office for a third time on December 5, 2024, and continues to serve as Chief Minister. As of July 12, 2026, his cumulative tenure has reached approximately 2,430 days—around six years and seven months—surpassing Sharad Pawar’s total of 2,412 days, or about six years and 221 days, as Chief Minister.
With this achievement, Fadnavis now occupies the third position among Maharashtra’s longest-serving Chief Ministers. The record continues to be held by Vasantrao Naik, who served for 4,026 days (11 years and 78 days), followed by Vilasrao Deshmukh with 2,686 days (around seven years and 129 days).
The milestone has once again drawn attention to Maharashtra’s political history and the longevity of its leaders in office. While Sharad Pawar served as Chief Minister on four separate occasions, none of his terms lasted a full uninterrupted five-year tenure. In contrast, Fadnavis completed one full five-year term and has continued to add to his cumulative tenure through subsequent administrations.
The latest milestone further strengthens Fadnavis’ position in Maharashtra’s political landscape as he continues his third stint as the state’s Chief Minister.
