Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong has said that relations between New Delhi and Beijing have moved beyond a “reset and fresh start” and entered a “new level of improvement,” signalling renewed diplomatic momentum between the two Asian neighbours.
Speaking during a Chinese New Year reception in New Delhi, the envoy highlighted growing engagement between the two countries following recent high-level meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xu said exchanges between India and China have become more frequent, while cooperation in trade, culture and people-to-people ties has witnessed steady progress.
The ambassador noted that bilateral trade between the two countries touched a record high of nearly USD 155.6 billion in 2025, reflecting more than 12 per cent year-on-year growth. He also pointed out that Indian exports to China registered notable growth, underlining the economic potential shared by both nations despite geopolitical challenges and border-related tensions in recent years.
Xu Feihong further stated that China views India as an important development partner and stressed the need for both countries to strengthen practical cooperation in multiple sectors. He also referred to the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the easing of travel exchanges as positive developments aimed at rebuilding trust and improving bilateral engagement.

India-China relations had faced severe strain after the 2020 military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. However, diplomatic interactions and ministerial-level discussions over the past year have indicated attempts by both sides to stabilise ties and reduce friction.
The envoy’s remarks come at a time when both countries are exploring avenues to improve communication and expand economic cooperation amid evolving regional and global geopolitical dynamics. Observers believe the recent diplomatic outreach reflects cautious optimism from both sides, although sensitive issues related to border security and strategic competition continue to remain key concerns.
