PM Modi says India’s maritime sector has transformed in the last 11 years with record cargo handling, new transshipment ports, green hydrogen projects, and ₹70,000 crore investments boosting global competitiveness.

New Delhi, October 30, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s maritime sector has entered a revolutionary phase, transforming completely over the last 11 years through major reforms, technological upgrades, and large-scale infrastructure development. Speaking at the India Maritime Week 2025 in Mumbai, Modi highlighted how India’s ports, shipyards, and inland waterways have evolved to match international standards, driving both economic growth and strategic capability.

The Prime Minister pointed out that India’s major ports have achieved record cargo handling, with overall capacity more than doubling since 2014. The operationalization of the Vizhinjam International Transshipment Port has given India its first deep-water terminal capable of handling some of the world’s largest vessels. Cargo movement on inland waterways has surged by more than 700 percent, while the number of operational routes has grown nearly tenfold. Modi said these achievements reflect the government’s focus on modernizing infrastructure and improving the ease of doing business in the maritime industry.

He added that India has replaced outdated colonial shipping laws with modern legislation aligned with global maritime conventions. This shift has improved safety, transparency, and investor confidence, while also strengthening domestic shipbuilding. Several ports, including Kandla and Paradip, are being developed into green energy hubs with major green hydrogen projects. The government has also rolled out a ₹70,000 crore investment program to boost port expansion, shipyard modernization, and maritime skill development.

Modi emphasized that the maritime sector is not just an economic driver but also a symbol of India’s strategic and cultural heritage. The government’s vision for 2047 includes positioning India as a global maritime leader, supported by sustainable practices and international partnerships across the Indo-Pacific. He said India’s long coastline and young seafaring workforce provide the foundation for achieving this goal, ensuring that the country becomes a key player in global trade and logistics.
