Traditional Kolhapuri chappals, crafted by Indian artisans, are now being sold in 40 Prada stores worldwide following a collaboration with the Maharashtra government to promote local craftsmanship globally

Mumbai | 30 April 2026: In a significant boost to traditional Indian craftsmanship, Prada has introduced Kolhapuri chappals across 40 of its global retail stores, marking a major international step for the iconic footwear.

The development comes nearly a year after Prada entered into an agreement with the Maharashtra government to promote and modernise the centuries-old craft. Under this collaboration, artisans were trained to align traditional techniques with global design standards, resulting in the latest collection now available worldwide. Kolhapuri chappals, historically crafted by artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka particularly Kolhapur have long been valued for their durability and handmade leather design. The initiative aims to preserve this heritage while adapting it for international markets.

The partnership gained momentum after Prada’s earlier showcase of similar sandal designs drew criticism for lacking clear acknowledgment of their Indian origins. This led to dialogue between the company and state authorities, eventually resulting in a formal collaboration.A key role in this initiative has been played by LIDCOM, which has been working to support traditional leather artisans. The organisation had also contributed to securing the Geographical Indication (GI) status for Kolhapuri chappals in 2009.

As part of the agreement, Prada has committed to funding training programmes for around 300 artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka over three years. These programmes are being conducted at institutions such as the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the Karnataka Institute of Leather and Fashion Technology, focusing on design, technical skills, and market trends. Selected artisans will also receive advanced training in Italy.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the initiative showcases the strength of “Made in India,” with locally crafted Kolhapuri chappals now entering the global luxury segment. The move is being seen as a blend of tradition and global fashion, giving Indian artisans a wider platform while bringing regional heritage to international consumers.
